When Freelancing Feels Hard

Tracking business and income is only fun when the flywheel is already moving quickly. In the beginning, it can feel heavy and resistant to any movement at all. Getting it moving quickly seems out of our reach.

The trick, if there is one, is to tighten your focus and control small movements.

An exercise:

Imagine you're standing or sitting in front of a scenic window with a beautiful vista. You can see the horizon or the hills and all the movement of the city.

Now, slowly bring your gaze down and find an outstretched hand. Focus on a single finger-tip and notice the shape and color of that finger. Put it under your mental and muscular control and move it. Slowly at first.

Make shapes with that single finger. Draw a triangle in the air. Quietly. Draw a circle. Now a reverse circle. Write out the letters of your name with this tip of a finger under your control. Make a dollar sign. Let the movement come naturally and develop a comfortable pace. Keep it moving. You're in control.

End exercise.

You now have an exercise to use every time you're feeling overwhelmed. Take a deep breath, then bring the focus back into the fingers and thoughts you can control; into an activity you can control.

This exercise can be brought to your freelance work as well. Make a list of the things you've done in the past that have worked. Prioritize that list if it makes sense or if a certain sequence is required. Then, just follow this new recipe.

Did that work for you? If so, think about why it worked. What did you notice? What shifted in your mind and muscles?

If it could be better, how would you make it better? Could you try again right now and refine the process?
