Things I’d Like to See on 200WAD

by @nicksimard PATRON | 527 words | 🐣 | 73💌

Nick Simard

Current day streak: 0🐣
Total posts: 73💌
Total words: 27985 (111 pages 📄)

have put no prior thought into this and I’m just spit-balling here, because I’ve not been terribly inspired to write recently. Something I can always do, though? Feedback for new features for apps/websites to add :)

Find/Follow Collections

It would be great to have the option to add one’s collections to some sort of list or repository so people could follow them, or subscribe to posts or something. I’ve been putting my posts into collections, and someone can click onto them from the bottom of one of my posts, but it would be cool to be able to browse users’ collections somehow.

Make Up for Missed Day

Maybe this defeats the purpose but it might be nice if there was a way to write more words or write multiple posts and then make up for a day that you missed. Let’s say you had a streak of 30-something posts and then you just have a busy day and forget to write. Boom! Back down to a streak of 0. It sucks. What if you could double up or write more, or something.

Karma/Kudos

Possibly related to the previous point, what if there was some way to earn karma points or kudos or something and that “currency” allowed users to get a post removed from the missed days. Like Starbucks stars. Every purchase gets you stars and then when you get 125 stars you get a reward. Maybe every 10 posts gets you a point and you need 3 points to fill-in-the-blank-with-something-awesome. Or if you leave comments that the post author deems awesome they can give you a kudos. Every user gets 5 kudos a month to hand out, so it would be done sparingly.

Hide Total Number of Missed Days

It sucks bad enough that my streak has started over a couple of times. Now I also have that little tear drop with a number beside it. At the time of writing this, I think it’s 5. Would be nice to be able to hide that. Or maybe hide all the stats if you wanted. Yeah, it provides accountability if it’s public but seeing a low number might discourage people from reading posts because they think the person is a newbie or not committed. What if the stats were only visible to people who follow you? Or the opposite. Once people follow you, stats don’t show. They already decided to follow you so what do they care if you’ve broken a streak?

Follow Topics/Hashtags

Similar to the collections, it would be nice to have an easy way to follow hashtags that I’m interested in.

Featured Image

This wouldn’t even have to be something that’s visible on the feed page, because that can start to get a little busy. It would be nice to be able to add a featured image that can be seen IN the post. Maybe? Or have an archive page for collections and those could have a featured image.

Ok, that’s enough for now. I actually want to read my book, but was determined not to miss another day. So here are my words :)

More than double the target number. Can I get some stars?

    @nicksimard the way to deal with a broken streak is to come back at it with another streak - don't write for a year :) fight fire with fire! :)

    @nicksimard Nice post! :) I bookmarked it to come back to it later.

    Find/Follow Collections - True! I'm gonna come back to your post once I'm done with the redesign and the reddit launch

    Make Up for Missed Day - the Scheduled Posts are here to write more and plan the posts ahead of time, just need to add Streak Freezes

    Karma/Kudos - Agree. There is going to be a point system.

    Hide Total Number of Missed Days - I'm gonna make the teardrop private yes, in a dedicated analytics page.

    Follow Topics/Hashtags - Agree!

    Featured Image - I don't plan on adding any embed. I would prefer for people to write here and add pictures in a cross-post on their blog or somewhere else :)

      @nicksimard @basilesamel The streak is sacred. Once you break it, that's it no redemption. As Stephen King says, "Done bun can't be undone." That's just my opinion, and of course Basile will do what he wants.

      Questions for 200WaD community? Or not?

      WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS???
      @m1guelpiedrafita @davidnge @AKi @brianball @erinfeaser @hwilliams @danielmiller @keni @zyumbik @timsubiaco @gabrielgreco @abrahamKim @chika46 @philh @jasonleow @rasmusrygh @basilesamel @lizblake @thepageman @simongylver @shire @haideralmosawi @chrisdeuda @flowerful @aaronmaurer @monolesan @keenencharles @sarasilva @knight @juliasaxena @hum @xanderjakeq @ewoma @gauthamsanthosh @daniellucas @kopkop @Rawhead. Forgive me @valentino

      My take on the above
      1. what "Streak Freezes" mean?
      (I wander what others think, but for me 200WaD is about writing 200 WORDS A DAY,
      if you don't, you lose a streak, THAT IS IT. It happens, ppl deal with it, some don't care, but for me THIS is really THE feature of 200WaD
      Or am I wrong???
      2. I might be some kind of conservative traditionalist, but i so often feel strong resistance when read about these new crazy ideas... so what is the point's system... point?
      WHAT will be points for?
      WHAT will you "buy" with them?
      WHY do we need that???

      will there be some discussions???
      maybe here LOL <devillaughing>
      Don't WE really need A PLACE for these kind of things?
      (So few ppl are on Slack, can be bothered checking what is happening there, as there are so many threads, interesting for some, boring for others)

      @timsubiaco Inspired by Duolingo. After you accumulate day streaks you earn points you can use to skip a day occasionally without losing the streak altogether. I think it's a good reward.

      @nicksimard @basilesamel - this clearly isn't a logical plea. Do you get points for not having sex -- that you can then keep your virginity with?

      You're really appealing to people who reply to the absence of light - "There's nothing worth seeing here anyway."

      @nicksimard @basilesamel @lucjah I don't know... For streak freeze the duolingo model looks good. It might happen one day that you are on holiday or dont have connectivity, when it becomes the norm to just use a freeze every other week that's something else. The balance between what feels right needs to be found and it can't be too much off either side.

      @nicksimard @basilesamel @valentino @brianball
      I was actually mostly confused with this part
      "Or if you leave comments that the post author deems awesome they can give you a kudos. Every user gets 5 kudos a month to hand out, so it would be done sparingly."
      as I understand this is not to get out of streak break, or is ti only about that?
      (so complicated system to earn a 1 "free ride"?)

      @nicksimard @xanderjakeq here i would actually agree with Basile,

      @nicksimard @basilesamel @lucjah my thoughts in no particular order:

      1) I don't really care about making up for losing streak, streak freeze etc. My motivation for 200wad is just to improve my writing, don't be intimidated by it, and make a habit if you will.

      2) Some times I do struggle with topics to write, so maybe a better curation of writing prompts.

      3) The community is great for getting encouragement,, although I would also like if there's some kind of feedback mechanism to improve my writing.

      4) There are lots of post written in a given day, sometimes I'm just lazy too to scroll through all the entries. Some kind of organization (group by topic) would be helpful, for example I'm interested in tech and writing, would be good if there's a tab for me to just view all posts related to those topic.

      5) Idea for motivating other 200wad members: I was once in 750words.com and they have a system for you to earn different badges (imagine a cool graphic sticker) if you did a certain thing. For example if you've written 1500 words you get a special badge for it, if you hit a 300 days streak you get a different badge. It's quite cool, and I've managed to stay writing for over a year! Just a thought

      @basilesamel I think the streaks have to be as hard as possible to maintain, that’s half the fun. Proof of work. It’ll diminish the value of the streak. Keep it simple ;)

      @basilesamel I’d vote to keep streaks as-is. It’s a big motivator for me to write everyday which is kind of the point? It sucks when I lose my streak but I should feel bad! Allowing freezing makes things complicated and seems like a way to cheat which devalues writing everyday.

      One thing I would suggest is that comments should contribute to your 200 words. It is still writing and it could motivate people to read each other’s writing more.

      @nicksimard @basilesamel
      @nicksimard
      1. Collection and tag following would be great, there are too many posts to read as much as I'd like now. Even just having a list of tags I follow on the sidebar that I can click on to see the tag pages would be good for me.

      2. Streak freezes.
      I'm not sure about. I've broken my streak countless times but it's fine for me because I've managed to keep writing. Would being able to freeze the streak negatively affect others? I'd make it cost a lot of points to get a "streak freeze" and limit it to using maybe just one each week.

      I do dislike those teardrops though, they keep taunting me...

      @nicksimard @basilesamel
      Oh yes, @keenencharles , you are an absolute master streakbreaker (19 up till now!) and I must say I admire and respect you for that as much, as I admire and respect people keeping their streak for months! It shows great spirit to keep writing despite all the odds, just coming back again, and again, and again!

      Teardrop... yes, I have a "serious" problem with it as well...

      <<limit it to using maybe just one each week>> - my suggestion is ONCE A YEAR! Well, once every 3 months sounds reasonable... and IF EVER, I think it should be available for everybody (once in more less 100 posts that is), without any points gathering and such bloated complications!
