Once you close to the death, you can change anything.

One day taking a taxi in my hometown, I met with a 66-year-old unusal but easy-going driver.

In my hometown where there is no foreigner, it was rare for taxi drivers to speak in English but he was one of them who can. He proudly told us he waited only for 15min to pick us up at the airport thanks to his certificate, while those who cannot speak in Englih have to wait for 3 hours.

He frankly started to talk about various topics e.g., other foreign customer, baseball, grandsons, his coming live guitar performance in the next few days, with a lot of cheerful jokes. Also, he asked many questions about us e.g., where and why we came, our original hometown, etc. He seemed to enjoy the conversation with a lot of English speakers.

One of his favorite jokes was as below.

Customer: 'Hey, how are you?

Driver: 'good, good, how about you? Where are you going?'

Customer: 'XX hotel. Your English is very good!'

Driver: 'Thank you. You too!'

After all, I asked him 'how did you became like that?. Where did you come from originally?' I assumed he came from wetern side since as a stereotype, western people tend to be more out-going and making a lot of jokes. But he was not. He started to share his personal aspect of his life.

He said he was originally a difficult and serious engineer as well as a demanding advisor. he might be disliked by his subordinates because of his pointing out tiny things. But after cancers, everthing was changed.

However, he** had 3 cancers in his life**. He stopped his job, and fought for cancers with anticancer drug. Then, he recovered. He went out for special training like lessons for Ray from Luke in Start Wars. He traind himself by hiking a long trail alone which was famous for curing their deseases, re-thinking of his life and the way he interact with others on the way. Throughout these training and driving a taxi car, he started to enjoy everything and remove all of bounday he set by himself.

He said, once he experienced closing to the end of his life, everything can be changed. His boundary was blown off.

I have been seeking for the way he is interacting with other people: being outgoing, making a joke and having a fun with others.

“I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs

@hiro Of course, you had me at the Steve Jobs quote. I think there are definitely some lessons and wisdom in this story about the English-speaking driver.
