Forget hot swapping your desk at a coworker space, today I hot swapped an entire laptop! Here's how #200wordsTIL

Thank you past Swizec for your forethought and infinite wisdom ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

So I arrived at the office today, plugged in my laptop, and made a cup of tea.

Come back to desk, laptop still hasn't turned on. That's odd ๐Ÿคจ

Showing that little "I'm hungry" icon despite suckling on the sweet sweet teat of USB-C. Tried other chargers, other outlets, even cables ... stopped saying even that it's hungry.

---

Laptop a pointless paperweight, I'm lucky we've got spares at the office. But they're not set up. Crap.

Apple god bless makes switching laptops pretty easy. You create a new user, log in with your Apple ID, and voila that's your bluetooth pairings, iMessage setup, passwords, etc.

---

Then you use Safari to download and install Chrome. Log into Chrome and voila that's your familiar browser setup. Theme, extensions, passwords, and all.

---

Next you need Slack and VSCode. Log into Slack and it's the same as always.

Install settings sync extension in VSCode, create new GitHub key, sync your gist and voila: Your favorite IDE like nothing ever happened. Extensions and all.

---

Install ScrollReverser and the Logitech Control Center to make your mouse feel like it's supposed to. Tell MacOS about the weird keyboard you're using so that feels mostly natural too. Some keys misidentified but you'll be okay for a week.

---

Then comes the hard part: Environment for your work project. Docker would be great here and you were discussing it as a team a few weeks ago but alas nobody bit the bullet.

---

Install homebrew, get openssl, install node, add rvm, gem install bundler, bundle install, npm install, the postgres app, brew install redis etc. Copy and change 1 config file. Add 3 variables to .bashrc

Great opportunity to update instructions for new engineers.

---

3 hours later and you've got a functioning laptop that feels almost like home. Now if only your Bash history were there
