o.. m... g... what a  H  U  G  E  topic...

Let's check out what it actually means. My vague memories of ideas often wander really far.

wikipedia says:

cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced by a person who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. This discomfort is triggered by a situation in which a person’s belief clashes with new evidence perceived by the person.

The Zennist, which popped up when I was trying to push the phenomena towards areas closer to my mind and heart, adds a bit:

A theory first postulated by Leon Festinger ( 1957), which holds that when an individual finds himself in a situation where he is expected to believe two mutually exclusive things, the subsequent tension and discomfort generate activity designed to reduce the disharmony. Festinger presents two basic hypotheses: (1) the existence of dissonance (inconsistency) is psychologically uncomfortable, which motivates a person to try to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance (consistency); and (2) when dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, a person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase the dissonance.

Analysis and advices to be posted(*)...  (A little glimpse: "We all have our own inbuilt mechanism for dealing with Cognitive Dissonance... its called the breath. Cognitions will only ever be... cognitions.")
