I don't know why it took me a while to discover Jacob Banks, but I have to thank Spotify COLORS for introducing me to him, as well as a host of other awe-inspiring artists. One of my favorite songs from him is Slow Up, which aligns with my mood these days.

What I've learnt from the ocean
Hard to dance and rejoice in the motion
Let the sun have its moment
The moon will come
What Iā€™ve learnt from a soldier
Every man is a son to a daughter
And we only remember
When we see the blood
Don't grow up on me
Keep that backstroke in your Afro
Don't you grow up on me
Slow up homie

At a certain point in everyone's life, time is the only thing that matters. Time is precious commodity, a feeling Banks reflects on in his interview with NPR. To live in the moment is a bit cliche, but maybe we do need to realize that it is the greatest luxury we can possess. Sometimes it's easy to feel that we live in a dog-eat-dog world in which it only makes sense to consider practical ends to the things we do. Sometimes I feel like we can be driven by what we don't have, the future, the goals, to the extent that we neglect what we do have.

And we only remember
When we see the blood
