The typical dilemma we faced with in daily life is an issue like "should we try new Chinese restaurant or favorite Italian pizza place?." We might think it depends just on our own character like curiosity, out-going, risk-taker etc. In other terms, our brains - neural networks - has been differently trained by enormous input data to optimize some outcome such as happy feeling, blood sugar level, less regret in a long run.

Do we have the "best" solution for this question? Mathematics could help us to live more easily. This is so-called "Exploration and Exploitation trade-off" problem.

Let's say if you move to a new place to live for 1 year,  you would need to explore new restaurants. You know nothing in the beginning, but get to know some. You might find a favorite one in a few months. In the last week of your stay, probably you do not want to discover another new place anymore since you really do not have the remaining time to enjoy it even if you find the one.

I almost forget what exactly is the solution but roughly 1/3 of the time you could spend on exploration and the rest would be on exploitation. If you are interested in, please have a look at "Algorithm to Live by".

@hiro My rule of thumb when testing out a new Chinese restaurant is to always go with the chicken fried rice first. That is the dish I judge on. I do find that once I have a favorite restaurant or favorite dish at a restaurant I rarely deviate. Maybe I should spice things up more often.

@brandonwilson Thanks for your comments! I also do the same by ording the milk tea when visiting on new boba tea so that I can compare apples to apples. At least you plan to stay in the same area, you have more chances to explore and find more tasty food ;)
