For the past week, I have run into people in unexpected places every single day. This is definitely more than usual but I love it when it happens. I am now starting to realize some patterns on what I should when it happens. More specifically answers to these questions:

  • What do you do when you see someone you know but you are with someone else at that moment?
  • How do you get their attention or say hi?
  • If you don't want to talk, how do you avoid them?

Art Museum

My friend (E) and I were strolling through galleries and stopped at a painting because she wanted to sketch it out. Right next to the painting was my other friend (B) who I haven't seen in more than 8 months.

I first recognized his hair but wasn't sure if it was him. Once E started sketching, I went closer to see if it was really B. He recognized me immediately. We said hi and gave a hug to each other. He introduced me to two of his friends he was with and started chatting to catch up.

Within 30 seconds of introductions, it was just B and I talking about things only we would know. So his friends were left out of the conversation and my friend was deep into sketching.

In this scenario, I could have done two things. I could have steered the conversation to look through the rest of the gallery together or go our separate ways.

I decided it was best we go our separate ways because of the clues like B's friends were disengaged in our conversation, it looked like B was giving them a tour and sounded like B's friends were from out of town.

In about two minutes of chatting and trying to catch up, we ended the conversation and parted our ways of agreeing to text each other later so we can catch up.

Public Transportation

I take the "L" trains in the morning to get to work. Just like any other day, I got into the train with my headphones listening to music and tried to find a seat. I didn't find a seat so, I tried to find a place where I can stand and hold on to something. While I was walking towards a pole, I feel a tap on my shoulder. As I look over, I noticed it was my friend, Z, who I haven't seen in a year.

I was so surprised to see him and take out my headphones to talk to him. It's tricky to talk on a moving train with so many people going in and out at different stations and the loud noises.

So we both walk over to the back of the train and start talking while standing. We both ask each other what we have been up to and how we are doing.

I didn't know if he was going to get off the train before me or after me. I had to keep that in mind while we chatted more and after a couple minutes, I asked where he was getting off to be mindful of time and our conversation.

Right before his stop came, we both ended the conversation agreeing to catch up soon.
