I am fixated on the idea of people finding things "reverent." According to the internet, reverence is a feeling of awe, but rather than suggesting paralysis, the feeling inspires active engagement and responsibility with the object of reverence.

Some are reverent towards the golden state Warriors, some towards The Beatles or Prince. Some might be reverent towards Star Wars, some towards Cracker Barrel's mac 'n' cheese.

It always strikes me as odd, but admirable, when I do meet the ardent Ohio State University football fan with a penchant for all things colored gray and dusty rose and an undying aesthetic love for pineapples. Or the adventure-loving person with the traditional of eating maple candies before skating competitions paired with the lifelong goal to swim in all great lakes and annual trips to upstate New York.

Being attached to seemingly inconsequential preferences is something I never understood while growing up in a super pragmatic household, where I grew up wearing clothes twice my size that I was supposed to grow into or was taught that things of monetary value was the equivalence of happiness. It's still a novel concept to me--the idea that many people indulge in things simply because they arbitrarily like it, not because of solely their utility, value, or nostalgia.
