I wrote about how jargons make your writing sound tacky.

Well the same is true for cliches.

Cliches are overused phrases. So many people use it because they are easy to come to mind, and as a result they have lost its power over time .

Some cliches you may recognize:

- In modern society...

- Throughout history...

- At the end of the day...

- In all likelihood...

- It has been shown that...

- Needless to say...

- When all is said and done...

- Stand shoulder to shoulder with...

- In the nick of time...

Using cliches cheapens your writing as people are likely to have read the same phrase in someone else's writing.

So we should stay away form it as much as possible.

If we want to keep the same meaning then we can replace them with words that are relevant to the context of the writing.

For example, instead of writing "Throughout history...", ask yourself when in history is that? What era or what year? If you can't answer these questions then you need to do more research on the topic you're writing.

Here's another one. Instead of, "She managed to get into the train in the nick of time." You can write "She managed to get into the train right before the train leaves at 7".

    @davidnge I actually like these:

    - Throughout history...
    - At the end of the day...
    - Needless to say...
    - When all is said and done...

    But the others make me cringe.

    Needless to say, this post came in the nick of time. When all is said and done, it has been shown that in modern society--but especially throughout history-- that at the end of the day we must stand shoulder to shoulder against the enemy known as clichΓ©s!

      @davidnge @abrahamKim - lol..... Nice one And.

      I like the post. I have to edit my post a few times to get rid of cliches....but it's worth the final result.
