A friend asked me the other day about how I identify myself: more closely as American or Asian?

Without hesitation, I responded "110% American." I'm born and raised American--linguistically and culturally. Somehow, I currently don't like the word "patriot" since it has grown to have ugly nationalist connotations, especially with this current administration. However, I am a patriot. When I look at my passport and see "We the people," I fondly think about our US Constitution and my country's commitment to liberty and general welfare for all. When I see "E pluribus unum" on the back of our pennies, I think the former motto well represents the spirit and history of the US, translating to "Out of many, one."

Sure, the US has its problems, just like any other, but I appreciate the stability from a functional democracy with checks and balances. Again, the system is not perfect, but it works. The US allowed my parents to settle here and eke out a better life for me and my brother, and that means a lot to me. My country has a rich and diverse history, with many dark and regrettable moments, but has cultivated a people that have grown to show the goodwill to initiate reparations for its past. Above all, America mostly affords its citizens the power freedom to engage civically.

@vickenstein I like the patriotism! I also chuckled at the concept of possessing and admiring pennies.

@brandonwilson thank you! I'm re-learning how to be appreciative of the things we have :) and the pennies are a nice reminder that that we prescribe to principles above monarchs!
