How do we get involved in communities?

I'm trying get involved, but my approach has been flawed. I've been lured in with a false sense of accomplishment; streaks, likes, wordless approvals. I need to communicate better with my peers. I need to forget about myself.

Too often, my goal with communities has been for my own benefit. Why don't I have many followers? Why don't people care what I have to say? Why not me? Why me? Why? Why? Why? Me. Me. Me.

Granted, maybe I'm being harsh on myself again. We all want to improve ourselves, maybe we have our own motivations. We want to grow our own audiences, reach a larger crowd, share in the spoils of the internet.

As well as writing 200WAD, I'm going to dedicate this next week on reading 200WAD. Give me your recommendations. Maybe your favourite posts from yourselves and others. (I already have a few).

It's not that I've not been reading some posts. I just want to read more, share more, absorb more.

I tend to read a lot of books, articles and Twitter but I also want to read more from the communities I'm coming to treasure.

I'm becoming a patron.

You already know what it takes. I think it's more about being patient in undertaking it. I think it's the lack of patience that drives a person to ask 'what about me'.

But from your post it's clear that you know it's not actually about you. It's about the community. So the best way to get involved in any community is to not care about what it can do for you... but what you can do for it... and then eventually... you'll be such a big part of the community that it will pay you back dividends.

@abrahamKim Thanks for this response! I've bookmarked your post for later. I'll be sure to post a comment!

Patience is definitely a key aspect of it. I know there are many ways to get a lot of views, likes, "friends", but I'd like to add (and receive) value too.

@craigpetterson - You have already done far more than most people by identifying what you want to do. Many people here write some of the best content. Here you will find people that can write fiction very well, write about their life experiences (my favorite subject), their system for productivity, writing, business, routine and their knowledge around business. Plus - you get to interact with people that have authored these posts and get a direct and real conversations with them.

I am not very active on FB, instagram or Twitter. I don't think I have the right skills for those sites but here, I feel like the interactions are more sincere. The best way that you can be a part of this wonderful tribe is spending time on other people's post, responding and sharing your view and responding to people's comments on your post.

@keni thanks! I intend to do just that.

I sometimes find it difficult though - not sure what to say, don't feel like I'm adding value (I need to get over that and just do it) or lately, don't have time for it.

That being said... I've started changing "don't have time for it" to "it's not a priority" and it really puts things into perspective...

Hopefully we'll speak more soon :)

@craigpetterson only one rule to become involved in a community: help others :) And then they will help you back. Entrepreneurs call it pay-it-forward, or karma in spiritual terms.

@craigpetterson -- some fun posts I've seen are when somebody like @lucjah writes an article describing posts written by others -- then uses links to those posts ( to kind of weave 200wad together) -- of course, the end result is that we all get a notification increment and will come read what you've written - so, make sure you're following #teamstreak -- those folks are serious -- and have good habits. @swizecteller is another favorite as are @hum, @brandonwilson, @jasonleow and of course, @baz

@craigpetterson @brianball #Teamstreak is definitely serious! There is lots of great content here. I spend far more time on 200WAD than I do on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I am very happy about that.
