How has type 1 diabetes affected you?
Someone asked that on Facebook.
I was diagnosed at 17. Had all the symptoms - weight loss, dehydration, and constant hunger. The diagnosis was quick. A simple test confirmed it.
The normal range is 70-120.
Then came the avalanche of instructions:
No sweets. Ever.
Drink lots of water.
Take daily insulin shots.
Don't pursue a stressful career.
I was a confused teenager wondering why my mother wouldn’t stop crying.
It’s been many years since then.
How has it affected me?
I am hyper-aware of my mortality. There is a constant reminder of how fragile life is.
So I chase experiences and moments every day. I try not to hold a grudge with a loved one. Just in case, that was our last interaction. I am famous for demanding hugs. Nothing is more delicious than feeling the embrace of the people I care about. Ego is the main recipe for regret.
When I experience an episode of hypoglycemia - I may weep like a baby for a few seconds but I move on. I am not afraid of dying anymore. Death will have to work harder to get to me.
I am busy living.
