Not even the greatest thinkers.

“Books will soon be obsolete in the public schools. Scholars will be instructed through the eye. It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with this. Our school system will be completely changed inside of ten years.“

Do you know whose words were these?

Thomas Alva Edison.

He was talking about his latest invention, the motion picture. It has been almost 100 years since he said that yet books are still all around us. His calculation about books becoming extinct in 10 years was a tad exaggerated, no?

But that’s why Edison was who he was. He saw things in much larger proportions to reality. He never cared if he would fail in his predictions or theories.

Unfortunately, right from putting a kid in school, we teach him/her to be right. Always.

That is strange because what we must be teaching him is not to be bothered by failure. Being right or wrong isn’t final.

That is why most managers in most organisations are afraid to take risks. They are not willing to experiment because simply they fear the consequences. Whereas entrepreneurs disrupt entire industries. They dismantle the long-held notions and brings fresh energy. They start with their gut and intuition and don’t care a dime about failure.

Like Edison.

Because, yes failure is a part of life, but not the finality of life.

@kp yes, if only there was some way to reward persistence in the face of failure starting as early as pre/K or elementary school. Is this a gap that parents or schools have to fill?

@vickenstein Yep. And if they don't.. something you should strive to acquire over time. I had a challenging childhood where not many new ideas were encouraged but since I left home I kept making conscious attempts to "make friends w/ failure" :) Still a process.
