The new Avengers video game was unveiled today and it's...underwhelming. The trend of multiplayer games as a service has been growing in recent years and it seems like this will be following that path. They didn't show off much of the game itself but what they did show had little interest to me.
Last decade almost every big budget movie came with a tie-in video game. Most of them were awful. A few were passable. But they all gave us a chance to play as our favourite characters, particularly superheroes.
Despite the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there haven't been many games based on it. Or even games using the characters to tell their own stories. Not until this one.
It seems like the wrong lesson was learnt from the failures of those tie-in games last decade. Rather than spending more time making quality games to meet a movie's release date. studios decided to not bother making any games. In my eyes, it's a missed opportunity. The premise that people would be more interested in a game if there's a related movie is sound. Vice versa as well. The success in one medium can fuel success in another.
We saw this play out with Marvel's Spider-Man last year. A critically acclaimed game that wasn't beholden to the movies but used their success to enhance itself. You got access to suits from the movies and you could really feel like that character. At the end of it, your interest for the next Spider-Man property is higher than it was when you started.
Maybe this Avengers game does the same. Despite my opinion of it, it has the potential to capitalise on the massive success of the latest movie. It just needs to be a good game first.
