It is very satisfying to see my writing streak climb higher and higher on 200wordsaday. I feel proud and don't want to see this streak restart at 0 days at all costs.
Streaks or chains are very powerful for habit creation. It counteracts a dangerous fallacy: That we are not making progress because we don't see any immediate benefits from our new habit yet. With many habits, it takes ages to see real results. How long have you go to the gym before you can say "Yep, that's a sixpack right there."? How long will I have to write until I consciously notice "Wow, I'm so much better at this."?
A sense of progress and accomplishment is essential though to create habits. Keeping a streak alive gives us precisely that when the massive breakthrough moment has still not arrived.
So, get yourself a calendar and mark every day with a big fat X when you performed your new habit. Look at your beautiful streak, your immaculate chain of X's, and you know you can't not keep going with your habit. Keeping the streak alive becomes too important.
Besides my 200wad streak, I'm also on a 24-day streak with Duolingo learning Italian. Wohoooo!!
