I was raised to be a sucker. I was raised not as the gamer, but a character the gamer controls. I was raised so because the people who raised me were suckers themselves.

I think so many humans β€” especially male ones β€” find video games alluring because they emulate our visceral desire desire for power.

Most individuals have little power. Not just at work, but also in their lives, since one’s livelihood is largely determined by economics. With economic inequality becoming more obvious as the world grows more connected, many are pissed to wake up and open their eyes to see that they are a sucker. And when you’re a sucker you can choose either to accept the truth or you can declare the game a invalid fraud.

I used to do the former. I thought I was cool because I didn’t need things like money to be happy. I did this for so long that I came to forget that I was lying to myself. It’s a recent awakening for me to actually declare honestly, not just to myself but to others in my life, that I no longer want to be a sucker. I want to start playing. I no longer want to be just a character. I want to be the gamer.

@abrahamKim From puppet to puppetmaster ;) You're right though, when we say we don't need this or that, we're not necessarily being the ascetics we think we are. We might just have given up. Either you're capable of truly living free from desire (unlikely) or you aim for the things you want and keep at it until you succeed.

I agree that being able to live free from desire is unlikely. Just like I feel that majority of ppl are not psychopaths, I think majority can't help but desire.

And also once the puppetmaster there is more! I don't know a lot about puppet shows so I don't know what that'd be lol.

@abrahamKim Guess you have to get there to find out. Similar to what you do after winning a game, maybe. You play another one.

@abrahamKim interesting thoughts. I could really relate into this ( but not in the gamer side). Actually, I wrote something like this before about "Moving from Consumer to Creator" -> https://200wordsaday.com/words/moving-from-consumer-to-creator-34145c35cbe20103d

Thanks for sharing! I love how the 3 pages of handwritten practice mirrors what this website aims to get people to do/practice.

wow you are right about 200wordsaday aiming about practice writing but with fewer words. Really similar to what I've tried before.

@abrahamKim for a person to be a gamer, there needs to be players in the game ?

In an ideal world the game would be like diablo -- where each gamer is mostly controlling just like one character/player in the game.

THe current game is too asymmetrical. Like it's like real time strategy games like starcraft, where one mastermind is controlling so much of less mindful groups of ppl.

Now this does not mean I think those in power need to give it up and share with the rest of us. I think that is unsustainable and would simply produce short term façade benefits of equality. True equality would be us plebs learning to control power for ourselves and elevating our selves.\

We will never live in a full utopia so there will always be simple players and even NPCs -- non playable characters.

Also just a note. There is even a level higher than that of a gamer. It is someone who actually just becomes a developer and can change the game and its code and design outright.
