“Do I need to specialize? Should I be a motion graphics designer, animator, or being simply a “designer” is okay?” I'm sure most of the professionals in this field will say you have to specialize, you can't be successful as a generalist: a jack of all trades, master of none. Being a specialist at something is great, however I believe it's not for everyone. Some people are okay with being just good enough at certain things. But that's not the point here.

Other than trying to become a specialist at something specific, you may be better off finding a niche that needs your services or products and focusing on it (e.g. 2D motion graphics designer for technology startups). However, having a super specific niche is not the only way to get in front of all of your competitors. Another type of competitive advantage is price — but we wont' go into that here as it usually only works for large companies which can sell at scale.

Specialization is something that differentiates you from the competition. There are many other ways that can differentiate you, however keep in mind that only differences that are meaningful to your customers will give you competitive advantage. For example, saying that you love dogs doesn't mean anything to the customers who want to hire you as a professional musician. On the other hand, your ability to play some rare instrument may interest the potential client if they find it interesting to have some unusual sounds in the composition.
