I suck at this. I'm a developer/creator and I want to just do the work, but having a portfolio is not enough. The internet is full of portfolios. Growing your network is mandatory for a successful business. Growing your network organically and in a natural way is not most beneficial for both parties but keeps it honest and real.
I can't be not real.
Yes, that's an incorrect sentence, my dear beloved co-writers. But I want to emphasize this. I can't suddenly become Jordan Belfort selling anything to anyone.
I rather create connections with new people by finding way of some kind of friendship. A shared interest such as a hobby, the kind of work or even just something simple as similar music you both like. It can be whatever. The human mind is simple. Build rapport, have new friends and create new business opportunities.
I got the added challenge of working remotely. I feel like most of my network has always been created organically and almost never through the internet.
So I need to approach it in a different way. Cold e-mail *gasp*
Think about your last received pitch or cold email. Did you reply to it?
The problem with most cold emails: it's all about me, me, me. It's selfish and impersonal.
So how do we reach out?
Short answer: Make it all about them. Their needs and desires.
We can do it like this:
1. Be genuine.
2. Be curious
3. Add value
4. Then go for the ask

1. be genuine: give a nice positive message about what THEY did.
2. be curious: ask questions what THEY are doing
3. add value: add to THEIR answers what you believe might be missing
4. do the ask if you feel it's there. It's a gut-feeling.
same approach, but
1. get to the point: keep it short and concise. Not pushy and overwhelming.
2. make it easy: add links, ways to connect/contact you, etc.
put yourself out there, show yourself and most of all be a good human being.
