What will I make today. Yesterday, I was supposed to dig into a writing prompt app. I got jack-hammered out of my home ( the noise + vibration from street work).
I constantly think about what I want to include in an app. One thing to consider is the amount of responsibility I'm willing to take on. The more I take, the more I can charge, but also the more work I'll have.
AppZapper. This is not a business tool. If it doesn't work, nobody's day is interrupted. There is little loss time for trying it -- and it's priced accordingly. Customers can also write in for tech support and feel delighted by one of my thorough responses.
200Wordsaday.com, is level two. The daily demand requires 100% uptime for the service. If it goes down for a day, we all lose our streaks. Some will be upset, others are not. Life goes on.
But it's not what I consider a business tool -- no money is being made or lost. We could write our 200 words into any text editor and the streak could be revived manually once systems recover.
Then, there are tools to help business serve clients. They could be communication tools like Slack or Blogging software or a thousand forms of 'we'll make your work easier'.
When these break, people get frustrated quickly. Now, you're not just interrupting their day, you could be interrupting their cashflow -- and that shouldn't be taken lightly.
Summary: When you think about building product think 'responsibility'.
Level0 1: Nice to have. ( a game )
Level 2: Functional and nice to have ( could save them time, but won't lose them money )
Level 3: Two-way Responsibility - they rely on your tool to earn money - and they had to choose you -- serious trust involved.
