I was texting a friend to advice him on a bold move he was contemplating.
I reminded him of his encouraging words for me while I was scared to do the same.
"Giving advice is a lot easier than taking it" He says.
That makes me pause. I was guilty of that too.
Later that day, I was reading one public letter someone wrote.
"Don't listen to people's advice. Listen to the advice you give them."
Twice on the same day, I got reminded how effortlessly I give advice but not to myself.
I need to make the effort to listen to my advice. Sometimes that voice is all I need reassuring me about the future, about what I am doing right, about the need to take a deep breath and appreciate how far I have come.
I need to make a habit of having long conversations with me.
Imagine this - You, with everything you know about you, taking the time to be there to listen to the person - who you have the power to influence the most. On Demand. FOR FREE.
What an underrated, underutilized and precious resource.
Excuse me - I have a date with my exclusive personal coach.
@keni
"Don't listen to people's advice. Listen to the advice you give them."
^ Such realness
@abrahamKim - I was expecting a rap reference here. I am sure someone has rapped about this before. Thank you!
@keni
"Bitch, real G's move in silence like lasagna"
Lil Wayne
-> Interpreted as :
The real ones don't make a lot of sounds giving advice because they're too busy with their 'personal exclusive coach'
@abrahamKim - LOL. Nice one.
@keni Thanks for sharing this. Well emphasized.
@seunoyebode - Thank you Seun.
@keni Love it! This is sort of a brain hack to get out of your own head. If you are giving advice to someone else, it comes from a different perspective than potentially-limiting self-talk. Thanks for sharing.
@brandonwilson - Yeah now I ask - what would Keni do in this situation :)
@keni LOVE THAT!!! Thank you! It seems so unbelievable and... so obvious
I did (accidentally :-)) listen to the advices I was giving recently and it was pretty shocking, how totally and completely everything that I was saying could have beed addressed (WAS addressed!) to me/myself... yea... so <<underrated, underutilized and precious resource>>
@philh , what do you think? GENERALLY! NOT about just my (failed?) advices...
@lucjah - Thank you! Yeah when I first heard it, it seemed so obvious. If people are reaching out to me for advice, maybe I should listen to my advice as well :). Life should take an interesting turn now.
