Ahh Texas, the land of BBQ, Rodeo's, Big Trucks, Cheap Gas, Guns and Food Trucks. Well, that's what I always thought it was all about. Actually, it is all of that and more but I was really surprised to find that Austin is a very cool city. It's vibe blends old-school Texan traditions with new-school tech trends. There's certainly no shortage of uber's, lime scooters and digital nomad workspaces.
I really loved Austin because of it's outdoor lifestyle. The general population seems young and hip which gives off a very positive and welcoming feel throughout town. Everyone is dressed in trendy and casual wear, but don't worry, you'll still see a lot of cowboy hats 🤠. The bars are super lax and most places have a cute outdoor area, spotted with deck chairs, tables and fairy lights. You get the feeling that you're just crashing a house party, yet everyone's invited - even the food trucks out the back!
Austin is very green and lush. Most neighbourhoods are shaded by these incredible, overhanging century-old Cypress, Pecan and Oak trees. A lot of the suburbs are going through a gentrification phase due to the serious demand for tech jobs combined with the city's no. 1 livability score in all America. Some of my favourite moments in Austin were spent just exploring the streets by scooter and marveling at the beautiful houses.
What's more, is the river system through Austin is very well kept. It's fresh and you can actually swim in it without fear of some sort of disease. Plus, there are turtles everywhere! 🐢🐢🐢
All in all, I would highly recommend checking out Austin for a weekend. Be sure to grab some slow cooked BBQ at Terry Black's, check out some live music on 6th Street, eat some late-night street food from the many food trucks, and spend a lazy Sunday by the Barton Springs Pool.
