Why did I follow their advice? Why didn't I choose my own way?
Imagine a visit to the doctor. You tell them you have a migraine and they immediately prescribe you aspirin. Would you visit this doctor again? You will probably go to another doctor who will diagnose your problem well and only then they will know the solution. Same happens with advices from other people.
You probably know more about your situation than people out of context who just want to “help” you. Don't listen to advices if you didn't ask for them. But we tend to make this mistake over and over again. Someone tells you to do something to solve your problem and you do it just because they have more authority, they are older, they read a book about the subject, etc. And then you regret following their advice, you realize that you knew more and could've made a better decision.
Before following any advice, diagnose it. Try to understand why is it given to you. What's driving their solution? Chances are, people are afraid of change, because you chose the path nobody else have tried before. Or maybe they had bad experience when they did something similar but it didn't work for them? Maybe it didn't work for their brother, daughter or cousin? Whatever that is, you have your own life to live so choose wisely. Advices are not made to be followed, they are made to be listened to. They just show you there are alternative options. Therefore, don't use them as your guide, choose your own direction.
