I decided to chill today.
Watched the latest season of Survivor.
I have been a fan of the show for a while. I wonder if I would make it if I were ever on an island like that. Unlikely.

As I watched the show, I was thinking. The show is brilliant.
19 years and 38 seasons.
The last season was among the #1 viewed shows on TV. That is an amazing accomplishment for any show after so many seasons.

So I tried to identify what makes the show work.
Why do I love it?
Why do millions of people love the show?
How does the show stay so fascinating year after year? Since 2000.

I don't think the million dollar reward is a big deal in terms of making the show interesting to watch.

Survivor is rightfully called a social experiment.
The title of a survivor has a big appeal.
Winning at both physical and mental games has a big appeal.
Seeing people overcome their fears has an appeal.
Seeing brave people cry like a baby when meeting their family has an appeal.

Those of us trying to make a product with appeal to human nature can learn a lot from this show.

@keni I've watched most seasons all the way back to season 1. The most recent season I missed the last several episodes because the timing coincided with getting rid of DirecTV. I heard the ending was quite controversial and "ruined" Survivor for some. I think in addition to what you mentioned, what keeps the show watchable year after year is the winning formula of personality selection.
