There are very few shows that go beyond mindless entertainment. These are the collection of the shows I love.

1) The Wire
A remarkable show.  This show educated me about the life of inner city kids in America. I sobbed when I watched the season with the kids. Sobbed because I knew that what I was watching was based on reality. And because I had it all wrong when I first came to Baltimore from my country.

2) OZ
Similar to the Wire but its about the worst prison system in the US. My brother didn't think I had the stomach for it. I didn't but I couldn't stop. Another soul moving show excellently done.

3) Game of Thrones
That show! The conversations! How does a writer come up with this on his own. Remarkable story, twist and plot. The show makes me want to learn how to tell stories.

4) Apprentice UK
Didn't expect a reality TV show, did you?
I love Sir Allen Sugar. His no nonsense wisdom is adorable. I have learnt a lot about business from that show. Educational and entertaining at the same time.

Honorable mentions:
House, Newsroom, Breaking Bad, Billions, The Profit, The Practice

Any other show recommendations?

@keni I've a bunch of faves, but at the top of my list is Sopranos, Peaky Blinders (which is the Sopranos in turn of the century Birmingham), The Office, United States of Tara (only 3 seasons but excellent). We're watching Fargo right now and it's great. Ricky Gervais' new show After Life is also fantastic, albeit a little depressing at times. Haven't gotten around to GOT yet. Happy watching.

@Rawhead - I found recommendations for peaky blinders while looking for another show like billions. I didn't get how the two are similar..but I will get back to it and see. I am a fan of Ricky Gerbais - sarcastic British humor is definitely my type of humor. Never heard of Fargo and the Tara one... Will add all these to my list.
      Thank you.

@keni I watched the full series of Oz and enjoyed it. I tried watching The Wire but didn't even make it through the first season. I'm not sure what I'm missing, but this show does not live up to the hype for me. Maybe I wasn't in a place to appreciate it at the time. Breaking Bad, on there other hand, is my all-time favorite show. It usurped The Sopranos mostly because of the highly controversial ending (which I did not like at all). Of course Game of Thrones. House was a great show also. Dexter was great in the first half of the series but started to go downhill in later seasons. I'm still watching Survivor all these years later. I need to get working on season 2 of Billions.

@brandonwilson - The first season of the wire was not all that. I highly recommend you keep going. It gets very good after the second season. It took me a while after the first season to continue too.
Breaking bad and Sopranos were both good. I hated the ending of the Sopranos too. The hours I wasted online looking for an explanation! Am a survivor fan too. I watched it non-stop in the beginning. I need to get back to that.
