This post was inspired by Danny Margulies. He has greatly helped me get into copywriting in freelancing through his website Freelance To Win.

Now, he's busy on Twitter and has some very uplifting messages to share. Here's my favorite so far:

Every day, we have the chance to program our mind to win or to lose.

By using phrases like:

  • I should/ shouldn't
  • This is hard/ frustrating ...
  • I hate ...
  • I can't ...
  • This sucks ...
  • If only ...
  • I can't afford ...

You're basically telling your mind and yourself that the world is unfair, there's no point even trying, and nothing good will happen. You're setting yourself up to fail.

Instead, you could rephrase your language to:

  • I get to ...
  • That's an opportunity.
  • I love ...
  • I'll make this work ...
  • The solution is ...
  • What if I tried ...

Immediately, you're looking at the bright side. You see the opportunities and solutions rather than the problems and obstacles. You're lifting yourself up to figure things out even though they seem tough.

It's all about the phrases you use. Be conscious about it. It's easy to get into a negative spiral. Catch yourself in the act next time and rephrase. It will make a difference. Try it out.
