(zazen streak day 7th)
We often confuse Personality, Character and Temperament.
What Personality is?
(Latin personalis ‘of a person’.)
"A complex pattern of deeply embedded psychological characteristics that are expressed automatically in almost every area of psychological functioning. "
Theodore Millon and Roger Davis
"Enduring patterns of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and oneself, exhibited in a wide range of social and personal contexts."
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)
What Temperament is:
(Latin temperamentum ‘correct mixture’, from temperare ‘mingle’.)
The biological-genetic template that interacts with our environment. A set of in-built dispositions we are born with. It is mostly unalterable. In other words, our temperament is our nature.
What Character is?
(Greek kharaktēr ‘a stamping tool’. From the early sense ‘distinctive mark’, ‘token, feature, or trait’, and from this ‘a description, especially of a person's qualities’.)
It is largely the outcome of the process of socialisation, the acts and imprints of our environment and nurture on our psyche during the formative years (0-6 years and in adolescence). It is the set of all acquired characteristics we posses, often judged in a cultural-social context.
And there is life and... there is RanGen - Character Personality Generator. Generated: "Open, Lives for the moment, Guilt prone and Inflexible"; "Secretive, Strategic and Miserable". Woooow... right?!
