I wondered why we even came out to the bars. We sat down at a booth and either only spoke to each other or Jackie pointed out people he knew among the crowd.
Every single person he pointed to came over to say hi, even the ones he spoke poorly of. Jackie did job well making people feel important, and he didn't slack on doing a great job introducing me. You would've thought I was some big shot if you were to only listen to Jackie. Apparently he was very popular. So it surprised me when Jackie breathed a sigh.
"Man, I can't wait until fall. This place is a real bore over the summer."
"But it seems like there's a lot of people here."
He pointed his thumb over the shoulder and said, "this? this is nothing. You'll have to come out with me once the fucking students are back."
Eventually a pair of guys Jackie seemed actually close to happened to swing by. Jackie suggested that the four of us go pick up some molly, but I said I was too tired. And I wasn't lying. Suddenly, I did feel very very tired.
"You sure, man?"
"I'll have to take a raincheck."
Jackie wished me a safe walk home, and while I was walking out he yelled out to me, "I will cash that raincheck soon!" I laughed and waved at the three of them as they went on with their night.
