Go on... fill in the blank. There is no right or wrong answer. I am sure we can all think of more than one thing that would make us happy. Is it a promotion, a bigger house, finding the perfect partner? But all this is an illusion. When we finally get promoted, we start eyeing the next better position immediately. The new house starts feeling small after just a short while. The finish line seems to keep moving out of reach as soon as we get closer.
We set ambitious goals for ourselves, and there is nothing wrong with that. Without them, we won't accomplish much. However, we keep holding on to the old belief that reaching our goals will make us happy, that we will be changed forever. We have to accept that happiness is not a static, finite state. While we fixate on the future, we forget to enjoy the life we are living right now.
The solution? Detach from the goal, let go of the result and focus on the process. Start to appreciate the small progress we make every day. The goal is not something big and distant in the future. It is simply to be better today than yesterday.
