Do you ever google something random to come up with a topic to write about here?

Well ... today I googled "How to be funny."

And what I found was actually very insightful.

The thing is ... I don't see myself as a funny person. When in a group of friends, I'm not the one cracking jokes all the time.

I also find it really difficult to tell funny stories. I tend to mess up the whole punch line thing... or overexplain it.

So, I want to learn to be funnier. In speaking and writing. Because ... why not. It's fun!

(And because I'm German, I think I deserve extra credit when I'm trying to be funny).

Here's a great article I found:

That's the type of tips I need. Because it tells me exactly what to say in which situation. And that's what I need to get started.

If any of you have more tips on how to be funny, please share them with me!

Most funny people have already internalized the ways to be funny and do it unconsciously. But if you can pinpoint to how it's done, I'd love to hear it.

@juliasaxena - Being funny takes advantage of human propensity to recognize a pattern. Our brains are so fast, we can often recognize where the speaker or writer is going -- and our mind is already at the finish waiting for us to finish.

To be funny, we have to say or write something unexpected - something humorous.

Puns are something to play with.

I had a German girlfriend when I was in elementary school. She was always getting in trouble for talking out of turn and trying to be funny. She was a bit of brat. And when it came to puns, she was the wurst.

@brianball That's right! It has to be unexpected.

I definitely didn't expect the German girlfriend story :-D
