We've all heard that we should live in the here and now.

That's all we've got. We can't change the past, we can't predict the future.

We can only enjoy the present moment.

But ... (there's always a but)

That doesn't mean we should only being doing the things that make us happy right this moment.

Eating a whole bar of chocolate would probably make me happy right now.

And maybe even again in a few hours, and again ...

Guess who will not be happy because of those choices though?

Future me!

Future me is going to be pissed at present me for making such poor choices because she has to deal with some extra weight now.

Present me didn't care she just wanted to be happy right now.

You get the point ...

We cannot not think about the future ... our future and how we are influencing it right now. Because we do!

What could you do today that would make your future life 10x easier?

It's likely not gonna be the choice that would make you happy right this moment. It might mean doing something uncomfortable.

Often, you'll have to sacrifice the short-term happiness for long-term gains.

But it's worth it!

@juliasaxena But how do you balance your life. I completely understand what you're saying, however (there's always a however) somethings we do in our present that future self doesn't care why we did it. Like feeling bad and consuming shots of tequila, or feeling lonely and spending your money on useless stuff. Our future self will never remember the reasons for our poor actions, it will only judge us for the action itself.

@Salem333 Ah I see what you mean. Good point. I think our present self has to be more aware of the consequences of actions. It has to weigh the consequences of having some tequila now against another healthier way of dealing with ones feelings.

@juliasaxena It's interesting now that you mention it. There seems to be different future selves that we have to think about for different actions. For a choc bar, that future self is a few hour ahead. I wrote a post before that for health, I need to practice habits 10 years ahead of my current age, so that by the time I get there, my health will be great. So for health, maybe 10 years ahead?! Hmmm.🤔

@jasonleow I like your thinking of practicing habits 10 years ahead!
