There was a wave of a new age thing spreading in Ethiopia when I was in college.
I was very sheltered before college so it was a sudden exposure for me.
I was told that if you joined this new thing, you get access to lectures, previous exams (which usually never changed) and get to attend parties and conferences with groups of people. In short, life would be much easier.
I knew no one in college. As a 17 year old, it was very intimidating. I looked like a lost child in need of rescuing.
Unfortunately, that fit the profile of a potential recruit. I was approached by several members to join. I was told about how the benefits extended to the afterlife. Before this experience, I had never heard anyone talk about the afterlife like they just visited it yesterday.
Why hadn't I heard about all this before? I wondered.
But then came the list of prerequisites to join. The two that got my attention were:
-Absolutely no dancing.
"If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution."
- Emma Goldman
