My second job in America was being a math tutor at the local college I went to. .

Students would come to the learning center and get private tutoring on different subjects. I was hired for Math and Statistics.

I discovered that I loved tutoring. Most people that came to the center have reached a turning point in their life. They have already realized they didn't have the right foundation. A lot of them were working full time - likely in a job they hated. They were in college to change their lives. Their determination was inspiring.

In the beginning I didn't know how to explain math. A lot of the students were anxious around it.

The first thing they usually told me was how much they hated math. I tried different things but it din't work. So one day, I tried something different.

Me  - What is 1/5th of 200?
Student    - Gave me a blank stare.

Me - If you had only $200 and you had to split it equally with 5 of your friends, how much would each get?
Student (within in seconds) - $40 of course.
They often had a look that said - That was easy.

Eureka moment - Teach math like it is all about money.

    @keni If I had you as my Math teacher, maybe I wouldn't have hated Math.

      @seunoyebode - :) Learning to love what people hate is where success lies :)

    @keni Most people intuitively understand money, so this is a great approach for introducing math concepts. Too much math is taught as theoretical concepts and not with real world examples.

      @abrahamKim - Are you reading Skin in the game now? Taleb has a book by that name.

      @brandonwilson - I didn't realize that until I started tutoring math

      @keni

      I listened to the audiobook ~3 months ago. Good but not as good as Antifragile.
