When we first arrived in the US, we lived in a bad neighborhood in Baltimore.
Our query for an apartment was:
1) Public transport close by
2) Reasonably priced
3) 2 bedroom apartment.
We got a two bedroom, utilities included apartment with cable for $450/month. It was located right by the bus station. Every morning, we all took the 530 am bus to go to school and work. We had NOTHING but we were happy.
And then one day, our mom got creative. She bought us a very old computer from a second hand store. Our first PC. I remember my brother could not sleep that day.
I don't know how he did it but he figured out what buttons to press and discovered a game on it. Jeopardy.
So we had a new type of entertainment. It was so exciting. We made teams to play the game many nights. Over and over again. We did it so often that in no time we knew all the questions and the answers. Those were simpler times.
We were full of ambition, purpose and grit. It was school, work and more work. It was not easy but we did everything together.
Having each other made the journey bearable.
