After starting with definitions, I scratched the relation of cognitive dissonance and identity, dived for a moment into a wonderful concept of Jungian Conflict Resolution and here I am, @danielmiller, hoping to finally arrive at the happy ending... of sorts...

Let's look at Kōans - "the best well known technic for creating cognitive dissonance."

[Kōans are part of 1200 years old tradition of Zen Buddhism called Rinzai. (Guys must be pretty good at "creating discomfort".)]

But why would anybody want to actually create cognitive dissonance

Well, when the zen teacher gives a student a Kōan - a story(*example in the comments), an absurd, paradoxical, contradictory statements or a question - it puzzles the rationale mind. But Kōan cannot be "solved" by thinking, only by an intuitive understanding

This understanding makes us see the world for what it is (enlightenment).

(I have always been puzzled, no enlightenment came out of there though, WHY anybody in their right mind would want to achieve something which leads to seeing the world for what it is, what fun in that???)

Nothing else but (maybe augmented indeed) Carl Jung's "transcendent function".

Rinzai's sister, the other Buddhism sect in Japan, Sōtō Zen, as means of obtaining "enlightenment" follows, on the other hand, the method of "quiet sitting and meditation" (zazen).

Maybe it is called "quiet", indeed there is no actual talking while sitting, but on the inside...  NOTHING is quiet there! The mind is simply bursting with cognitive dissonances.

And yet... there we are, sitting "quietly", withstanding the tension between the opposites, holding onto the ultimate "inbuilt mechanism for dealing with Cognitive Dissonance"...

    (*) Joshu asks Nansen:
    http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/glg/glg19.htm

    - What is the path?

    - Everyday life is the path.

    - Can it be studied?

    - If you try to study, you will be far away from it.

    - If I do not study, how can I know it is the path?

    - The path does not belong to the perception world, neither does it belong to the nonperception world.
Cognition is a delusion and noncognition is senseless.
If you want to reach the true path beyond doubt, place yourself in the same freedom as sky. You name it neither good nor not-good.
