There was a loud banging at my door at about 2am.
I woke up and immediately panicked.
Why would anyone knock so hard?
Is this a terrorist attack?
Was I getting robbed?
I wasn't fully awake so my mind went to the most awful things possible.
I rushed to the door and heard a lot of noise. I got close to the door very cautiously and tried to understand what was going on. I still was not certain if it was a good idea to open the door. I didn't want to give up my safety to whatever was banging so violently in the middle of the night.
Then came the smell. Carbon monoxide. It took me a few seconds to realize that there was a fire in the building. And then I heard some people screaming and telling us to leave the building.
I realized I need to get out now.
Maybe I should jump from my window down 4 floors to safety?
After few seconds of thinking, I quickly abandoned that intelligent idea.
I went for the door. Fortunately, there were about 4 firemen right outside.
Instantly, I felt safe. They helped escort me to outside the building.
What a night.
