Today by the little flame on my profile stood proudly number 108.
When for us Westerners number "100" is one of the most significant (maybe in the context of rarely, yet achievable length of human life?), "108" brings to me a very special associations.
Every morning during sesshin (period of intensive zen practice) we are doing 108 prostrations.
But, once I started browsing the data, it turned out 108 is universally unique!
Did you know that:
- The distance between the Earth and Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
- The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
- The distance between the Earth and Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
And, there is more:
- The pre-historic monument Stonehenge is 108 feet in diameter.
Ok, but here a little doubt has risen. Maybe that is where the foot measurement was actually established and it goes just the other way round... But... NO. There is evidence that this unit was in widespread use across neolithic southern Britain.
So it is actually the same 108, as the one interconnecting the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, delusions, prostrations, beads of mala...
